Are we living a purposeful life daily?

As Rotarians, do we often ask ourselves, "Are we living our daily lives purposefully?" Now that we are nearing the end of the year, it is time we recollect our thoughts and look back at the past 11 months. What have I achieved thus far? Have I lived a life that is purposeful? Have I spent some time in self examination on the things which I have accomplished? Have I spent quality time with the family? Have I given my total best to my work, my business, my community, etc? Have I given some time to someone near and far? This may sound very much like "A Guide to Daily Living". Before doing the things we want to do, consider first these precepts of day-to-day living. The District has recommended to RI to adopt "A Guide to Daily Living", which is still pending approval. Once rectified by the Council on Legislation, we shall be hearing more from our District Governor...

In the meantime, a simple rule to observe and be aware of is The 4-WAY TEST.
Of the things, we think, say or do
First : IS it the TRUTH ?
Second : Is it FAIR to all concerned ?
Third : Will it build GOODWILL and better friendship ?
Fourth : WIll it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned ?

The District has been advocating that we promote the use of The 4-WAY TEST in conjuction with "A Guide to Daily Living". Though there are no hard and fast rules on daily living, I do have my own simple 3 P's of life: Always Have a Positive Mental Attitude, Be Patient - do not rush, Persevere till Success if you feel and think that it is really worth the while. Everything is possible.

I am privileged to be a member of the Rotary E-Club of 3310. I have always wanted to be a Rotarian since 10 years ago. As I look back, I am honoured to have learned so much during my past four years with eClub 3310; first, having served two years as the New Generations Director, then assisting in taking up leadership roles. The important think is to be active and to take part in activities. Otherwise, you would not be able to appreciate fully the meaning of being a Rotarian. Our mission to be a Rotarian is learning how to serve others with sincerity, but this would bear no meaning and purpose if we are Rotarians in name only (RINOs). Enjoying fellowship with fellow Rotarians and practicing what we learn from one another is one of the joys of being a Rotarian. Having said that, I find this year's theme of ROTARY SHARES to be very appropriate. How many times have we as Rotarians shared our stories of success within the Rotary organisation.

If you look at the world population in comparison to the Rotary oraganisation, we as Rotarians still have so many things to share and learn. It all begins by doing the small and simple things, such as sharing your knowledge and success with others. So, start sharing, have a purpose in life, be active, be active in all Rotary events. I bet you, when you are involved in them, you will understand.

RI President Wilfrid Wilkinson has stressed that the Rotary movement is a great one, and its greatness is most effectively demonstrated through the individual efforts of its members. Like what he said, "We take time to share our talents, skills and energy with others, and through this process, we create a better world."

It is this simple, fundamental generosity of our members that shall inspire new members to join eClub 3310. I encourage you to lead by example. Be visibly involved in all eClub 3310 and District activities and inspire other members to join you. Motivate others to volunteer their time and talents to carry out any simple service project both locally and abroad. Start off small.

This year, I ask all of you to say YES to the new challenges that we are going through. Say YES and be involved, Say YES I will share, say YES I will give my time. Say YES I will assist in whatever that I can to share my talents and skills.

December is now upon us. It is also the time for our EGM to elect new Club Officers for the next term. I urge all eClub Rotarians to give yourself a chance to take up a new challenge. You never know how good you can be until you do it!

This is also Family Month in the Rotary calendar. Let us celebrate another new born, Rotaract E-Club of District 3310. It took us 2 years of labour before we can experience this joy. With the graduating ITE Interactors, we have a natural pool of supply. They asked me, "Uncle Edmund, what are we going to do next?"

I told them, not to worry, we will charter an eRotaract Club. As we have a success story in Rotary E-Club of 3310 for the last 4 years, we were able to convince RI to create another first -- the 1st Rotaract Cyber Club outside the United States!

So make an appointment with us on 13 December 2007. I look forward to our Christmas fellowship. Please join me and say, "YES, we can do it... and more!"

President Edmund Chew
Rotary E-Club of 3310
