CLUBS OF THE MONTH

(Prepared by Shiv Luthra)

Many Rotary Clubs put more INTERNATIONAL touch into their weekly meetings by recognizing a Rotary Club from another country. To facilitate this practice, the BREADBASKET presents data on several clubs each month. These clubs are not selected because they are the biggest or the best, but merely chosen from our files at random, keeping in mind that we should recognize clubs from all the corners of the Rotary World. We try to have information that is accurate and up-to-date. This is much easier if readers would email information about their clubs to Shiv Luthra at shivluthra@vsnl.com for inclusion in the BREADBASKET.

Those who use the data below to recognize a club are requested to send a note to the club they recognize to let them know that they have been honored.

This month the BREADBASKET is happy to recognize:

CLUB 2

Club : Rotary Club of Valley Center

State : California

Country: USA

District : 5340

Chartered: 1967

Number of Members: 38

Meetings:

Language: English

Home Page:

English is our main language, with Spanish a common second language due to being so close to the Mexican Border.

We were over 60 members and hope to grow to that figure in the near future.

Valley Center is a rural community in the North Eastern part of the unincorporated area of San Diego County in the USA. It is made up of approximately 100 square miles of valleys, hills, pastures and groves. The typical homesite is at least two acres. Agriculture plays an important part in the lives of its residents. Retirees move here to become "gentlemen Farmers" or try their hand at growing exotic flowers. Full time farmers harvest acres of avocados, citrus fruits, apples, peaches, row crops, decorative eucalyptus and many other varieties of fruits, vegetables and flowers. Families move here to raise their children in a clean country atmosphere. They soon become involved in many community and school activities. Horse ranches are also in abundance in Valley Center. Several equestrian parks are available for public use. One may even encounter farms with dairy cattle, ostriches, emus, llamas, pigs and buffaloes while meandering through the country roads in this region.

Our Rotary club is very active in the community, sponsoring along with other service clubs the "Just say No" to drugs. We also sponsor a Pancake Breakfast during the annual Valley Center Western days as well as Ice Cream Socials at the local schools during their Open Houses. We have sponsored a Casino Night to raise funds for our Honorary Mayor Candidate. This is one election where you can buy the Mayorship at a $1.00 per vote!! The club has a foundation that presents scholarships to high school seniors. Most of our fund raisers are dedicated to this fund.

We have "sister" clubs in Istanbul, Turkey, ( new 4 bed neo -natal intensive care units were purchased), and Ecuador ( housing project to replace homes destroyed by storms). The club is always looking for "sister" clubs projects.

This year we are trying a new approach to fundraising. WE are having a "Celebrity Waiter Dinner". It will be held in the closest large town at their Center for the Arts.

CLUB 9

Club : Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill

State : Essex

Country: United Kingdom

District : 1240

Chartered: 1995

Number of Members: 25

Meetings: Mondays at 1930 hrs at the Coffee Mill at the Mill Hall, Bellington Lane,

Language: English

Home Page:

Rayleigh is an expanding former market town in Essex, 30 miles east of London. We are a young club and currently single gender.

Our main project to date has been an annual outdoor concert with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra as the main attraction. We have also had input from local musical organizations. This year we ran the first of, hopefully many, our schools orchestral and ensemble musical competitions. A monetary prize was given to the music department of the successful schools in each category as well as the opportunity to perform on the same bill as the Royal Philharmonic.

In 1998-99, for the fourth of our annual concerts, we received the Rotary Significant Achievement Award; one of only 115 awarded that year.

Last year we joined our Local Council in the promotion of an evening event in aid of the Council Chairman’s Charity. This was so successful that we have been asked to help with a similar event this year.

Last year our major financial support was for our local children’s hospice, "Little Haven". Our other support is usually given on request to charities where we can support the maximum people for the money spent. We also provide practical support to a local home for the handicapped people.

We are in the process of twinning with a club from Holland, Emmen Monarch.

CLUB 10

Club : Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest

State : Nova Scotia

Country: Canada

District : 7820

Chartered: 1956-57

Number of Members: 55

Meetings:

Language: English

The Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest came out of the main Halifax Club. We have since spun off one other club – Halifax Harbourside in 1989.

Fundraising

The first fund-raiser of the club which ran for a number of years was the Fisherama where we sold tickets at $! Each for folks to fish off one of the local piers.

The longest running and most important event has been the Subscription Dinner, now entering its’ 33rd year. We sell 300 tickets at $275 each and each patron has a one in six chance of winning a prize equal or greater than the cost of his/her ticket. The evening is a black tie affair and usually raises $32000 to $35000 net profit. The last ticket drawn wins a luxury automobile.

Our interests focus on the underprivileged in the community, we have just committed $50000 over 3 years to a Metro House for substance abusers and mentally challenged folks. We have been seriously involved in The Gambia with funding programs and numerous local causes.

The average age of the club is creeping up and we share the problems of attracting and retaining new members with many other clubs. We are currently struggling to find additional fund raising projects that will wean us off dependence on the Subscription Dinner as our only fund-raiser. Innovative suggestions on how to motivate the members to actively sell the tickets are invited.

I am particularly interested in exchanging details on fund raising concepts
