Special Note from the Chair

Dear ROTIans,

This is to officially announce the results of the balloting held re the motion to amend the By-Laws of ROTI. The amended Clause 2.1, read: "Any Rotarians in good standing, spouse of such Rotarian, or any Rotaractor in good standing who has registered on the main ROTI Communication list register, and who is willing and able to receive periodic official announcements, and ROTI publications, will be considered a "ROTI" member in good standing."

The new By-Law 2.2 reads "Every member as defined in the terms of Clause 2.1 shall agree, as a condition of membership, to subscribe to one or more of the ROTI mailing lists."

The amendment made by Robin Chapple and seconded by Chris Wilks passed by a vote of 145 YES and 15 No. The balloting was observed and tabulated by Mingo, Ivan, and myself.

ROTI is an official fellowship of Rotary International and we embrace sharing as a means of that fellowship. It requires both taking and giving in a spirit of mutual friendship. We don't require you to post, (but hope that you might sometimes desire to do so) but just receive the information which may prove beneficial.
There has been discussion re this issue for several years, both by the ROTI Board of Directors, and the ROTI membership. The consensus being that a member should, at the minimum, be willing to receive at least one of our ROTI lists. Presently we offer three: a General list which covers a multitude of topics, a Serious list which is moderated with only topics specifically related to Rotary are allowed, and a ROTI-Tech list that is devoted to issues pertaining to the technical aspects of electronic communication; software, hardware, webpage design, etc. If you do not enjoy occasional levity in the posts, then perhaps you should choose the Serious list instead of the General list.

If you are not presently subscribed to one of the above lists, we ask that you do so prior to July 1st. We will allow for members to go to a "no-mail" mode for a period of one month. This will prevent their mail box from overloading during extended travels when they may have no email connection. If an extension is required we ask that an email be sent to the ROTI Chair stating the reason for the request. If deemed necessary the Chair may forward to the BOD for their opinion.

For those that would like to receive all the day's posts at one time, the digest version is an offering to consider.

In order for our lists to be more user-friendly, we ask that everyone:

  1. Use the subject line to identify the topic. If you change topics in your posts, change the subject line to indicate the new topic. This will help those that are looking for a specific post. It will also enable those that use the search feature to find information on a specific subject.
  2. Please delete the long tails by simply replying. This creates a big problem for those that use the digest from. Each post shows all of the replies, and the length becomes excessive. You might choose to leave only a portion of the original post which shows continuity of thought.
  3. Banter and off-Rotary topics are allowed on the General list. Many will find it similar to Rotary meetings with announcements about other issues allowed, and even banter and jokes being told. We do ask that the jokes do not contain humor which is generally unacceptable in public. We also ask that all posts be aware of the multi-cultural nature of ROTI. Posts that would be offensive to those of varying religions, ethnic groups, political and governmental designs are not appropriate and subject to sanction by the Sgt at Arms, or the BOD.
  4. We ask that if it appears that a topic is of interest to only two or three members, that continued discussion be taken off-list between those members. This will reduce that number of posts on the list that may not be of interest to a large number of members.

This will be a time of re-discovery, and we sincerely wish to offer our membership what they hope to find in ROTI. It is a place where friendships are made, answers to Rotary problems are found, and ideas are exchanged to benefit both its members and Rotary.

Yours in ROTI and Rotary,

Ron Nethercutt,
ROTI Chair 07-09
