Merry Christmas from a Lurker
Posted by: "Philip" pmnugget@yahoo.com pmnugget
Fri Dec 21, 2007 8:26 am (PST)

Hi all,

I would like to send Christmas Greetings to all of you out there who recognize Christmas. From my family to yours, I hope it will be a great holiday season for you.

I didn't used to be a lurker. [G] I'm not sure how it happened. I does seem like my family consumes more of me than it used to. I was under the mistaken impression that it would become easier as they got older. I was thinking the hard part was when they were little infants and toddlers, and as they got older they would just sort of take care of themselves. (NOT!) [G] I am a little bit peeved that none of you warned me about this.

But the K-kids are all doing very well and likely much better than their papa. They seem to be healthy and happy and all doing excellent in school and in the top ranks. There are several of you out there who are Godfathers to Keagan (the youngest) and she remains Rank 1 for her entire grade level for every year since she started school. She is an amazingly happy girl and sometimes I tell her to stop being so darn happy! (in a joking way) Kyle, the eldest at 15 is already approaching 6:2 in height and still growing. He is the starting center on the varsity basketball team and was recently approached by a very good High School/University here for a possible basketball scholarship. We are all excited about that and hope it works out.

Though I am not very involved anymore, ROTI seems to be doing very well and I think in quite good hands. Chairman Ron is doing a very fine job and keeping a close eye on the Fellowship. He is one of the best global roving "Ambassadors" in ROTI, and that is important. We owe a lot of thanks to Ron and all the board members who do great work to keep this Fellowship thriving. Steve Sokol, our Sergeant at Arms, is once again working hard and effectively to keep peace, order and harmony in the Fellowship. Robin C, as Membership Chairman and recent "Rotian of the Year" is working diligently to keep our Fellowship organized and from descending into chaos. [G] Simone Collins has done a beautiful job of rebuilding and maintaining our ROTI web site and Mike Barr our long time List Chairman works day after day to keep the lists functioning properly. Past Chair Chris Wilks is heading up the Breadbasket team and works very hard to keep the issues coming out month after month. We should all try to make a better effort in reading the BreadBasket each month. It is one of the great features of this Fellowship. There are many other board members, officers, advisors and committee members (too many to mention) and they all deserve our thanks.

Well again Merry Christmas to all of you and I hope at some point I can change my lurker status to at least semi-lurker status.

Best wishes and I hope 2008 will be a great year for all of you.

Philip Merritt

It's the Mangosteen Season in Sabah
Posted by: "mingo" mingo.georgekm@gmail.com mingochin

Hi all,

It's the season of the Queen of Fruits, the mangosteen, here in Sabah, and perhaps in the other parts in South East Asia as well. There is such a lot of it this year that they are being sold for RM10 for 5 kilograms. (about US$3 for about 70 fruits) making it the cheapest fruit in the market.

To those who have never tasted a mangosteen have not really lived (hihihihihi). Unfortunately it is illegal to import Mangosteens originating from South East Asia into the US and those few which have somehow found their way there (illegally) would cost a bomb, so it may be cheaper to fly all the way here to really live.

BTW this is NOT a spam. It is because I am enjoying this fruit so much that I am bursting out with enthusiasm.

hihihihihi

Marriage in the family of Rotary
Posted by: "Ho Loon Shin" loonshin@yahoo.com loonshin

Dear Rotarians,

I am no good at writing love story but there is a happy ending in the marriage of two new Rotarians -- Dr Mark Hon and Su-Jan Yeo -- in Singapore on 29th December 2007.

The story goes like Mark Hon travelling more than 11,000 km from Madrid to be admitted to a meeting place call the Rotary eClub of 3310, whereas Su-Jan Yeo (a former Rotary ambassadorial scholar) travelled further, 12,000 km, from Canada to Singapore and become a Rotarian in the same club. In less than a year, friendship turned into courtship and a lovely wedlock.

The moral of the story? You never know what you're gonna get in eRotary; and eClub is not a virtual place, it is for real!

With best wishes,

Dr Ho,

Happy New Year - Good Bye Polio
Posted by: "Dr. Todd Lindley" rotary6060.tl@gmail.com lindleydds
Wed Jan 2, 2008 7:56 am (PST)

Dear ROTI friends,

My own DG Scott Harness (D6060-Missouri) sends out a weekly newsletter via email to about 2,000 of our district's Rotarians. He took a bit of a break over the Christmas/New Years holidays, but did manage to send out the little New Year's message below - which he has given me permission to share with my ROTI friends.

This is sent via a highly formatted online email service, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will arrive in readable fashion.

Todd
Overland Missouri

Greetings!

I was planning on a short New Years Greeting to Rotarians, but something happened at my house in the waning days of 2007 that I wanted to share with you as we start the 2nd half of the Rotary Year.

While making the bed Saturday morning I had the TV on for background noise while I was picking up. My two daughters came in and started watching and shortly thereafter I realized what I had turned on was the movie "Warm Springs". This is the story of Franklin Roosevelt from shortly before he contracted polio and deals mainly with his adjustment to having polio and how it affected him personally and professionally.

Naturally the word "polio" was used several times in the movie and finally, my oldest daughter Rachel turned and said, "Daddy, what is polio?" Over the course of the next few minutes I explained to both my daughters what polio was, how it used to be that you would be fine one day, wake up with a fever the next day, and within days or weeks a person could very well be paralyzed or lying in a machine because Polio robbed you of the ability to even breath on your own.

I told my daughters how when I was a boy Polio hit over a 1,000 people each day and how my mother had taken me to the health department to get me a vaccine so I would not get the Polio. I told them to think of all the children in their school and triple that number, and that is how many people would get the Polio each day. My daughters started to look a little frightened.

I then told my girls how in 1985 Rotary decided to stop Polio. How Polio was no longer in the United States. That a simple little bit of medicine, only two drops could prevent someone from getting Polio. I told my girls how friends of mine had traveled around the world to make sure little children got this medicine and would never be sick from Polio. I told my children that soon polio would be gone. I told them this was part of the reason that I was gone so much this past year, because I was trying to help Rotary and stop polio. I told them that I loved them very much and they would never get polio, and I wanted to make sure other little children did not get the Polio either.

Elizabeth, my 5 year old, being very much like me, said "Daddy, that must cost a lot of money", I told her it was actually only about 60 cents to keep a child from having Polio and I thought that was well worth the 60 cents, even if I never saw the child or even heard from the child.

My daughters turned back to the movie, and I continued with my work around the house. My girls talked to each other and got up and left the room, they both came back a few minutes later. Each of them gave me 60 cents they had taken from their piggy banks. Rachel told me, "Daddy, we want to make sure two other girls don't get Polio".

Happy New Year!

Yours In Rotary,

Scott Harness

RIPE D.K. Lee's Address

Lee asks Rotarians to `Make Dreams Real' for world's children

By Ryan Hyland

RI President-elect Dong Kurn Lee announces the 2008-09 RI theme, Make Dreams Real, to incoming district governors at the 2008 International Assembly. Rotary International President-elect Dong Kurn Lee addressed incoming district governors today at the 2008 International Assembly, urging them to use their resources to help curb child mortality. Lee said he was in disbelief when he learned that 30,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, measles, and malaria.

"Once I understood the issues behind that terrible number, I knew what I needed to do," Lee said. He told the incoming governors that Rotary will keep the service emphases of recent years -- water, health and hunger, and literacy -- but asked them to focus their efforts in each of these areas on children.

"In 2008-09, I will ask you all to Make Dreams Real for the world's children," he said. "This will be our theme, and my challenge to all of you."

"Children are killed by illnesses that become deadly in combination with poor sanitation and malnutrition, " Lee said. In addition, families stricken by extreme poverty are trapped in a cycle that only leads to more unnecessary deaths. "It's a cycle that is not interrupted because there is no access to education."

He challenged the audience to do their part to give children "hope and a chance at a future" by reducing the rate of child mortality in the world.

"We will bring clean water to their communities and create sanitation projects that keep children healthy," Lee said.

As the incoming governors begin preparing for the year ahead with the training and inspiration they receive at the International Assembly, Lee reminded them of Rotary's power and encouraged them to use their resources efficiently to maximize the good done around the world.

Governor-elect Geoffrey Mathis, of District 9930 in New Zealand, thinks the upcoming RI theme allows Rotary to dream big. "Make Dreams Real will be an easy theme to sell around the world. We all like challenges; Lee has allowed us to put our dreams to practice."

Rotarians can improve children's health, Lee said, even in small ways, such as delivering mosquito nets, rehydration salts, vitamins, and vaccines. "So much more can be done with just a little more: a trained birth attendant, a simple clinic, a school feeding program, a visiting nurse," he continued. "These are simple and direct ways to save children's lives."

In 2008-09, Rotarians will be asked to open their eyes to the needs of children in communities near and far, Lee said.

"Children die not because nobody can help them, but because too often, nobody does. But you and I, here in this room, are Rotarians, and helping is what we do best," he said, adding that "our job is to Make Dreams Real for children. If every one of us does this, at the end of our year, we will all have achieved something wonderful."

Reprimanded by DG for telling club members new theme

Hi all,

Well I received the following e-mail message from my district governor.

"It is a little late for this year, but in spite of the new Rotary Theme being posted on the RI website as soon as the incoming RI Presidents makes the announcement on Monday morning in San Diego, it is protocol for the District Governor Elect to make the initial announcement to the clubs how ever he or she sees fit."

I was quite taken aback since I have been forwarding the theme to the current DGs and my own club members since 1996. No one has ever said anything like this before. Oh well, my faux pas for the past 12 years. Before now the DGs have always thanked me for being so up to date on Rotary and passing the theme on to them.

The concerns expressed earlier are indeed valid. Recent reduction of attendance to 50% isn't going to improve things either. In India, finding members isn't a problem but retaining them is. My own experience as a president attests the issues I worked upon:

  1. have lively meetings,
  2. reduce fellowship timings,
  3. introduce fund raising as a regular activity
  4. involve members in activities,
  5. enforce rules of procedure & constitution.

There were other things I desired to introduce but could not do so:

  • family evenings without outside waiters etc., more like pot-luck dinners,
  • all activities to raise funds other than community or other avenue projects we undertake,
  • make members sing along a welcome songs for visitors,
  • introduce rotary etiquetts,
  • enforce penalties for infractions, such as speaking without one's turn, using poor language etc.

In general my term left me with many an additional innovations untouched. I hold these can improve our clubs.

This was posted on the ROTI-Tech list, but a ROTIan needs help re the Club Leadership Plan. Can anyone provide him with a link that would be of assistance. It is midnight in the Philippines and I am beat......

Dear Amitabha

I am forwarding your email to the Serious ROTI list. Hopefully someone will be able to respond quickly to your request. It is almost midnight in the Philippines, and I am headed to bed. We just had a nice social, new member induction, and meeting with a group of folks that will be forming a new Rotary club. A busy, but tiring evening.

I think some of the folks in the USA are awake and might be able to provide a link to the information you need.

As I am on my way to our District conference by tomorrow, I need to have one details about the implementation of Club Leadership Plan and District Leadership Plan.

There had been some discussion previously which abruptly terminated.

There had been some confusion whether there will be no 4 avenue directors in the club as per the Bye laws and instead have 5 as per the CLP. What I have gathered and understood that there is no change in the existing system but the club is to have 5 standing committees in line with CLP.

May I get some feedback from all in ROTI to provide our Rotarians some info about this.

St Baldrick's Day - Any Other U.S. ROTIans Getting Shaved
Posted by: "Cheri Cutright" cutright@mtco.com ckbryant.geo
Wed Jan 30, 2008 6:46 am (PST)

Hi all,

I was curious if any other U.S. ROTIans are planning to participate in this year's annual St. Baldrick's Day activities to raise funds for Children's Cancer Research? This will be my first year. One of the Ottawa, Illinois Rotary Club members was shaved with her youngest son last year, and I decided to do it this year. I hope to raise $500 for the kids. I'd love to hear from any other Rotarians here who will be getting shaved on March 15th, or who just heard about this and would like to do it themselves. Any ladies doing it? This is a great and fun day of many people participating in a very visible example of Service Above Self.

If you want to see or learn more go to http://www.stbaldricks.org

My own St. Baldrick's Day participant page is located at http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/shavee_info.html?ParticipantKey=2008 |23235

This site will be more interesting after I have been shaved on the 15th and I can post the AFTER picture beside the BEFORE one.

Hi Rtn Steve,

This is quite easy. It is a 2 step process:

Firstly, use the following site to first download the video file, by copying the Youtube URL and pasting it into the Download box:

http://keepvid.com/

Unfortunately, the downloaded file is a .flv file and cannot be viewed with the common viewers. You would need a FLV Player.

This is the second step. Go to the following site to get the FLV Player:

http://www.applian.com/flvplayer/

With the downloaded video file and file viewer, you now have everything you need. Good Luck!!

Thanks....Dev

Many thanks to our colleague from Einar in Provence for forwarding Rotary's Seven Paths to Peace. We will integrate its philosophy and steps as best we can in our ongoing dialogue for peace here on Cape Cod, MA.

I agree with Steve Henning that other religions beside Muslims had and have had terrorists in their midst. As an Irish Catholic, born in Ireland, I am too familiar with the terrorist activity of Irish Republican Army .............The Catholic Church in Ireland was incapable of silencing their 30+ years of murder and mayhem on English soldiers and anybody who disagreed with their philosophy. It took dialogue facilitated by Sen Mitchell and Pres Clinton to bring peace between Protestant and Catholics in the province of Ulster.

Similarly moderate Muslims are incapable of halting the growth of Jihad and Islamic terrorism ............they need our help.As a Rotarian, I am motivated by the call of Paul Harris. .. "Divergence is the pith of Rotary. In Church and Trade associations we explore ideas with people. The germ of Rotary is bringing different kinds of men [and women!] together".

Lets join moderate Muslims, the fastest growing religion in the world and assist them in becoming assimilated into our American democracy and in eradicating terrorism worldwide.

Check our web-site at www.dialogforpeace.org and leave us a message.

Einar,

You have mistakenly placed words in my mouth that are incorrect. Even though I am S@A, I have been involved in many conversations on this list that spoke of religion. We had a fairly lengthy discussion of Judaism involving both orthodox and Reform implementations of Hebraic law. We have had discussions of beliefs from almost every major religion. The conversations have never been limited as long as they were informational.

If the thread turns to controversial or confrontational. I will ask that it be stopped. If an opinion is stated as fact repeatedly and seems to be headed in a bad direction, I will step in. Rotary fundamentals clearly state that Rotary is and always will be a nondenominational organization.

Before stepping in, I will always apply the four way test. Any proscelatizing will be considered "fair to all concerned" or "building goodwill and better friendships". If at any time I question an action, I will ask the board. Still, the first intervention is done be me.

If the problem is not resolved by my intervention, the board will consider placing the violator on a "monitored" basis, meaning every one of his messages are specifically sent to review. This has been done several times.

If the person placed on "monitor" status, continues the behavior, he/she is removed from the list. During ROTI's history, we have place maybe a eight to ten on monitored status and two are three have been removed. Although it is not a rule, every person removed from the list have been by unanimous agreement.

If you feel any actions that I take of have taken are improper, I would suggest a complaint be filed with the board. I will file it for you, you may contact Chair Ron, or you may refer it to any board member. Everything that is taken to the board gets discussed thoroughly. I think you would be very surprised at the number of messages on the Board list.

I do have to agree with one thing that you said: Rotary is about tolerance! Therefore, I have to ask that you tolerate the views of others and not create situations on the list that are generated by your prejudices.

You believe your religious beliefs are correct, I believe mine are correct and I think most on the list believe theirs are correct. That is the beauty of Rotary principles - we are free to believe as we do.

I think I can speak for the board in saying you will not be allowed to denigrate any one religion because it conflicts with you beliefs.

Yours in Rotary principles,

Steve Sokol

Dear S@A Steve,

It was interesting for me to read your reaction to my message for ROTI-an Finbarr. Before reading your message I received the following reply from our friend Finbarr:

" Thank you Einar from Provence for your support .............We have to think of religions as cultures and not just as movements of faith and spirituality."

At the end of your message you say:

"You believe your religious beliefs are correct, I believe mine are correct and I think most on the list believe theirs are correct. That is the beauty of Rotary principles - we are free to believe as we do."

By these words you hit an important point. In fact I do not believe that my religious beliefs are correct. I hope the day will come when most on the list do not believe their religious beliefs are correct. When this point has been reached we can have a free discussion along the principles of Paul Harris:

"Divergence is the very pith of Rotary. In church and trade associations we explore ideas with people we agree with. The germ of Rotary is bringing different kinds of men together."

YIR

Dear Einar,

I am in total agreement with the statement of the ROTI Sgt@Arms. He is tenacious in following the guidelines of Rotary as to what is allowed on our ROTI lists. As a educated member, I am sure you are aware that while Paul Harris advocated 'tolerance,' he also said said of our organization,

"it espouses the attributes of every major world religion--yet Rotary has no religious message of affiliation." (A Century of Service, p. 167) The same source continues: "From the beginning Rotary has insisted on spiritual and political neutrality."

The Rotary website has this to say:

"No divine right can be vested in anyone to pronounce the final word or the ultimate truth. In matters of faith and religion, prescriptive morality should be avoided, as it often is the root cause of hostility and divisiveness."

Several ROTIans have expressed interest in religious discussions that are informative. Those that are apostolic or promotional are to be avoided.

I admire the work of our Sgt at Arms to maintain an orderly discussion of religion without allowing bias. To me this is the example of tolerance that must govern ROTI.

Rotary E-Clubs & 2010 Council on Legislation

Dear Rotarians,

The 2010 Council on Legislation (COL) is when a decision will be made regarding the future of Rotary E-Clubs. If a favorable legislation is not approved by the COL, e-clubs will cease to be recognized by RI. It is very important that the e-clubs work together to present a united legislation regarding e-clubs. So, the present fourteen eclubs will have to start preparing to present a unified proposed enactment that can be supported by all clubs on the 'Rotary E-Club pilot' project.

Going forward, the charter president of the Rotary e-Club of 3310 sincerely believes Rotary E-Clubs certainly have a place in Rotary. He also views his eclub as no different from any traditional Rotary Club but with the flexibility of cybermeetings. In fact, many New Models Clubs -- started 1 July 2007 through 30 June 2013 -- have followed a similar mode of operations as theirs (imitation is flattery. I invite you to see their track record of service projects successfully accomplished at the E-Club website at: http://www.rotaryeclub3310.org/

I like others to give any valuable input or feedback: can you accept to have a Rotary eclub after 2010? What do you think? Be frank, please. Thank you.

Best wishes,

Loon Shin
Rotary E-Club of 3310, Singapore

Having been a member of an e-Club, I know that these groups can successfully complete projects. I continue to have two reservations - one is fellowship, and the other is making up a meeting for other members of Rotary. For members who cannot attend regular meetings of a land-based club - for those with physical handicaps that prevent them from attending, or as was my case, living in a place where there was no Rotary club for several thousand miles in any directions - they are a valuable alternative.

While the cyberworld is certainly a place where people can meet and get to know one another - witness ROTI - yet here, we regularly read of how good it was to meet another member "in the flesh." I joined ROTI in the flesh, at the Indianpolis Convention and opne of the highlights of the Salt Lake convention (for me) was to meet ROTI members in the flesh. In an e-club members get to know one another from all around the world - in my former club, we had members in South Arica, Italy, England, throughout the US, in India and the current club president lives in Japan. Yet meeting members in person in Salt Lake was also important. I am not convinced that the all-important dimension of fellowship is fully satisfied in the eclub environment.

I also have reservations sbout making up at an eclub. While it certainly provides a service - and again, can be valuable for people who have no other choice - it can also be "an easy way out" and seems to side step the spirit of the weekly (now the biweekly) meeting. In theory one is supposed to spend at least 30 minutes on line - I read fast and could certainly read our club meeting in 15 minutes or less. Some "meetings" were nothing more than posting RI material easily obtained on line. But one cannot treat an eclub differently than other clubs - if an eclub is a Rotary club than other Rotarians need to be able to visit and make up meetings. In my former club we used to say that helping Rotarians make up attendance was one of our club projects. (Even in this format we had members who could not maintain a 100% attendance.)

I think that eclubs have great potential value but I also worry that problems have not been solved and that the potential for abuse remains great. For me one of thoe great joys of Rotary was being able to attend meetings around the world - eclubs have the possibility of extending that function. They also can help make the attendance requirement relatively meaningless.
